Columbia And Ecuador: Beautiful Countries With Attractive Permanent Residency Laws For Those Buying A Vacation Home

Blog

If you're looking to buy a vacation home in South America, then the two best countries are Columbia and Ecuador. They have several benefits. First, they are more affordable then areas such as Argentina, Brazil and Chile. Secondly, they have very easy visa and residency paths for real estate investors. This is important for anyone who is purchasing a home, and not simply vacationing. You don't have to live there year round. You could rent out your property by using a real estate listing service. However, should you desire to retire and move to South America, these two countries are your best options.

Bogota, Columbia

Some people associate Columbia with the wild days of Pablo Escobar, but those days are long gone. Columbia is an amazing country situated between Ecuador and Venezuela.

The best place to buy a second home is in Bogota. This is the capital. It is located in the interior of Columbia. It is the largest and safest of the big cities. The local government has succeeded in dramatically curbing the violence. Each year the city gets safer.

The city is located at a high altitude and has amazing mountain views. There are abundant restaurants, theaters, live music venues, and nightclubs. Bogota leaders transformed the city into a major tourist destination, so there is a focus on making the city as fun and safe as possible.

You can get residency if the property is valued at two hundred thousand dollars. You don't have to reside in the country full time in order to achieve it. After five years of having residency, you can apply for regular citizenship. Columbia allows dual citizenship with the United States.

Quito, Ecuador

Ecuador is located on the western coast, next to Columbia and Peru. It is safe and inexpensive. In fact, it will often show up on lists alongside Argentina and Costa Rica, as one of Latin Americas safest destinations. Quito is the capital. It has an old world look. The architecture has a strong Spanish colonial look. The areas are divided up into "parishes". Some are very modern, while others retain a classic, old world look.

The city is at a high elevation, and sits in the shadow of an enormous volcano called Pichincha. This interesting topography has made Quito a popular destination for people who love to hike mountains and even volcanoes.

There are abundant restaurants, supermarkets, bars, and entertainment venues. Also, Quito is located less than 200 miles from the coast. Ecuador has some of South Americas best beaches. So you have the benefits of major city life in Quito, plus the ability to take a weekend trip to the coast and stay at a beach community such as Esmeralda.

A real estate investor's visa in Ecuador requires only an investment of twenty five thousand dollars. However, you cannot be outside of Ecuador for more than 90 days a year during the first two years of the visa.  Eventually you may apply for citizenship. Ecuador also allows dual citizenship with the United States.
